OPERATES WITH 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY

Scala Data Centers, the hyperscale data center platform founded by Digital Colony, has just reached net zero carbon emissions in 2020/2021 for its operations in Brazil with 100% of its energy consumption provided from renewable sources.

Following this achievement, Scala has been issued a CarbonNeutral® certification by Natural Capital Partners, an expert in carbon neutrality and climate finance. Scala has been operating under 100% renewable energy since 2020 under long term PPAs backed by renewable energy certificates (RECs).

“We are setting a new standard for the data center industry by proving through tangible actions that it is possible to reconcile robust growth with investments based on sustainability,” said Marcos Peigo, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Scala.

“Scala delivers today what our global customers are demanding to be the standard for years to come, and Scala’s pioneering spirit in this area is a pillar of our business strategy. I am proud to lead a company that considers sustainability a top priority, and I hope Scala paves the way for other businesses to conduct themselves responsibly.”

Scala also stated that it has invested in carbon compensation projects that will further deliver a number of other sustainable development benefits to the country, these include changing the fuel source of the kilns at the Kitambar ceramics factory in the state of Pernambuco to renewable biomasses and preventing deforestation in 105,000 hectares of rainforest and building sustainable economic livelihoods for communities in the northern region of Brazil, along the Purus, Juruá and Valparaíso rivers, in the state of Acre.

“We are delighted to be working with Scala on its carbon neutral programme as the Company supports these critical projects in Brazil. Preventing deforestation and shifting to sustainable fuel use are two of the highest impact ways that we can deal with climate change, and we are grateful for Scala’s important work,” said Rebecca Fay, Chief Marketing Officer at Natural Capital Partners.

Digital Colony, the digital infrastructure investment arm of Colony Capital, Inc. established Scala Data Centers in April 2020, through the acquisition of data center facilities from UOL Diveo in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
